This is one of the many silo structures we have designed. However, this one deserves a mention because of two things:
Firstly, the supporting structure of this silos didn’t provide uniform vertical stiffness of all support points, and the design had to reflect that. This lead to additional stiffening of the bottom part of the silos. Sadly, the impact of uneven rigidity of supports is not known by many designers, which may lead to a LOT of serious problems!
Secondly, this was the first model where we included LBA outcomes in the report as well. Not to use them as “outcomes” but rather to educate our Customers about the fact, that LBA should not be used for shell buckling design. In this project roof capacity calculated correctly with nonlinear FEA is over two times lower than the one estimated with LBA!
We are always happy to display important lessons from our designs, and this is just a perfect case to do that!
In shell design support rigidity is really important. When the supporting structure cannot provide equal support rigidity it is critical to be super careful about boundary conditions!
