In this task we were asked to deliver the numerical verification of plastic capacity and void stability of several pressure vessels. What was challenging in this case was, that due to technical requirements, connection between the columns and vessels was very specific, and required accurate analysis.
This was a pretty demanding situation, since the connections concentrated stresses in the shell, and we had to also design the vessels following linear FEA standard requirements.
Of course, there were other challenges including some very interesting stability cases, but without a doubt the complex connections of the columns in earthquake conditions were the leading issue.
Legacy codes and standards requirements based on linear FEA can be very conservative. Sometimes it’s necessary to strengthen a vessel that is well designed and would normally work just fine… to meet the demands of some of those criteria. Luckily more and more codes allow for fully nonlinear FEA design, so we do not have to be conservative, and still design a robust and safe structures!
The first project we did with Enterfea was a silos design in 2015. Their non-linear FEA analyzes allowed to significantly reduce the costs of that project. Recently with the enormous support and commitment of Enterfea, we did a pressure vessel with imperfections design. Non-linear FEA analyzes allowed to save a project that seemed to be hopeless. Having 15 years of experience in the design industry, I can say that at the current level, Enterfea is no longer competing with the competition, they set new standards in the design projects and can only compete with themselves.
