This was a really unique problem. Our Customer reached out to us because they had to connect their structure, to the existing steel elements… but they could not use welding at all! And since the existing element was a huge vertical square pipe (and an I-section on a different location), both without any plates, openings etc. this was a really interesting challenge!
Of course, there were other limitations at play (about which bending moments can be transferred, etc. In the end, the design included two different custom connections that used pins, pre-stress tension rods (to provide friction) and a significant amount of elements.
Thanks to this solution, all of the Customers requirements were met, and the design was safely implemented.
FEA is a really powerful tool! Without nonlinear algorithms, contact and pre-tensioning I don’t think we would be able to prove, that the proposed solution will work just fine. While designing each connection with FEA is definitely an overkill, there are some (like those) that simply require that treatment!
