Optimization of typical silo
Silos are the structures I enjoy the most. Even though I have designed a substantial amount of them, few deserve a special mention. This is one of those silos: a typical solution I optimized for one of my Customers.
The design was created for very lightweight wood dust, with high explosion possibility. Untypically for the steel silos, vertical pressures were small, and circumferential tension due to blast was the biggest concern. It was even higher as the silos was not circular in cross-section but polygonal, which made things a bit more interesting.
An interesting side note: background of my blog page is a graphically enhanced stress distribution in the hopper of this silo.
